The Ft. Lauderdale Hurricane first made landfall in Florida then proceeded across the Gulf to make a direct hit on New Orleans on September 19, 1947.
That storm flooded Jefferson as well as Orleans. As
a result of the flooding, bigger levees were built across the entire
lakefront spurring an era of residential expansion from Gentilly to Lakeview in Orleans and across Metairie to Kenner.
The 1947 Hurricane is ancient history
even for me. My mom was here and had to be
evacuated from military housing near the lakefront by the Red Cross.
The eye of this storm moved directly across the city. Mom was
evacuated by boat during the calm in the center of the eye.
