Katrina joins a long list of storms that have changed the way we live in New Orleans. Katrina has the distinction of causing the most death and destruction of New Orleans storms. It was not the strongest, and it was not unexpected.

  • 2005 Rita Sept 24 : Coming ashore just west of Lake Charles as a Category 3 storm, Rita flooded southwest Louisiana destroying property south of I-10 from Texas to just west of Lafayette. Unlike Hurricane Audrey which hit the same area in 1957 and caused nearly 400 deaths, Rita was responsible for only seven direct deaths.
