Danger Spot. This area was 90% African-American before the storm. It includes the C.J.Peete, the Guste and the B.W Cooper Housing Projects.
During the storm it flooded heavily and has been recovering very slowly. Now it is the focus of much of the new street crime taking place in the city. Of the 161 murders in New Orleans in 2006, ?? of them took pace in Central City. Why is crime so hard to manage in such a small area?
Central City began
to be developed in the 1830s. At that time, it was a large, mosquito-infested,
swampy area, 3-10 feet below sea level. From the 1830s to
the 1950s Central City was known as "back of town." Most of the homes built here are shotgun style houses built by contractors to be rental properties for immigrants. Until the end of segregation in the 1960's, Central City was a popular shopping district with many African American shops drawing trade from all areas of the city.
On February 7 , 2007 New Orleans was shocked to hear that a 17 year old had shot and killed another teenager. The boys had been in a fistfight and the smaller one had lost. When he returned to his home in the Guste public housing project, his mother gave him a gun and sent him out to get revenge. Waiting patiently the boy ambushed his foe outside a poboy shop on the corner of Clio and Simon Bolivar. Five shots assured a kill. The boy is still at large but his mom is behind bars.
