When FEMA proved it was incompetent in the aftermath of Katrina and the Corps of Engineers displayed decidedly defensive characteristics during the investigations of the levee failures, pundits began asking what had gone wrong with our government. The best government that money could buy was showing incompetence that could not be ignored.

The joke circulated at the time was that Republicans philosophically believe that government by its very nature can't be effective, so just elect them and they'll prove it!

Politicization includes unwarranted appointments of well connected but otherwise unqualified individuals. Michael Brown as FEMA director is held up as the primary example unless you consider his tenure with the Arabian Horse Association as qualification on emergency managment and preparedness.

  • Justice Department : The office of the Attorney General was established by Congress in 1789. The original duties of this officer were "to prosecute and conduct all suits in the Supreme Court in which the United States shall be concerned, and to give his advice and opinion upon questions of law when required by the President of the United States, or when requested by the heads of any of the departments." These duties are now the purview of the Soliciter General while the duties of the Attorney General have been greatly expanded to include executive authority over the Department of Justice. :: Continue reading...
