Katrina wrecked the city and the press was there to cover the event. It was sensational unfolding news day by day, hour by hour for over a month.

A few reporters embedded themselves and experienced the storm. Most arrived the next day. They were able to get to places and discover information that authorities could not. As water rushed into the city through wide breaches in the levees the film crews were there. They captured the rescues of thousands from flooded neighborhoods on tape. CNN aired footage of the thousands waiting at the Convention Center before FEMA even knew they were there.

CNN offered 24 by 7 Situation Room Coverage of events as they unfolded and kept on following the story until it was eclipsed by Rita and the evacuation of Houston a month later. Fox, MSNBC and others did the same.
